Approved document B (Fire Safety) states,
1.27, All buildings should have arrangements for detecting fire.
BS5839 - 1 specifies three categories of system, category L is for the protection of Life, category M is for Manual alarm systems and category P is for Property protection. Category L systems are sub-divided into:
L1, system installed thoughout the protected building,
L2, system installed only in defined parts of the protected building,
L3, system designed to give warning of a fire at an early enough stage to enable all occupants to escape safely before the escape routes are impassable,
L4, systems installed within those parts of the escape routes comprising circulation areas and spaces, such as corridors and stairways,
L5, systems in which the protected area(s) and the location of detectors are designed to satisfy a specific fire safety objective.
